York Avenue, East Cowes
Street guide, Isle of Wight
A residential road in East Cowes running through one of the main housing areas of the town. York Avenue has interwar and postwar housing, including council-built homes from the mid-twentieth century when East Cowes was a centre of aircraft and hovercraft manufacturing. The Saunders-Roe factory, which built flying boats, hovercraft and later aerospace components, employed many of the residents of streets like York Avenue. The road is typical of East Cowes's residential areas: modest, functional and community-orientated. The floating bridge to Cowes and the Red Funnel ferry terminal to Southampton are within walking distance, and Osborne House is a short distance to the east.
