Pier Street, Ventnor
Street guide, Isle of Wight
A steep street connecting Ventnor's High Street to the Esplanade below, named after the former pier that once stood at its foot. Pier Street is one of the main routes down through the terraces of the town, and it encapsulates Ventnor's character: steep, narrow, lined with older buildings and offering glimpses of the sea between the rooftops. The street has a few shops and businesses at the upper end, becoming more residential towards the Esplanade. The gradient is typical of Ventnor, a town where level ground is scarce and every journey involves climbing or descending. The street is well used by residents and visitors moving between the High Street and the seafront.
