High Street, Sandown
Street guide, Isle of Wight
The main shopping street in Sandown, running from the railway station towards the seafront. Sandown High Street has the typical mix of a seaside town's commercial centre: newsagents, fish and chip shops, amusement arcades, gift shops, charity shops, cafes and a few independent retailers. The street is busiest during the summer holiday season when visitors swell the population. The architecture is a mix of Victorian and postwar buildings, some in need of refreshment. The High Street connects the residential areas behind the town to the Esplanade and the beach, and it serves as the main pedestrian route for visitors walking from the station to the seafront. During quieter winter months, the street has a more subdued atmosphere.
