George Street, Ryde
Street guide, Isle of Wight
A residential and commercial street in central Ryde, running roughly east-west between the upper town and the main shopping streets. George Street has a mix of Victorian terraced houses, some shops and a few community facilities. The street is quieter than Union Street and the High Street, with a more residential character. Some of the houses are substantial Victorian villas reflecting Ryde's nineteenth-century prosperity as a fashionable resort. The street connects to the network of side streets and lanes in the upper part of the town, where the residential character becomes more pronounced and the views across the Solent open up from the higher ground.
