Carisbrooke Castle
Historic Site, Isle of Wight
A medieval castle on a hill above Newport, serving as the seat of the Lords of the Isle of Wight for centuries. The Norman keep, Elizabethan defences and the well house with its donkey-powered treadwheel are the main features. Charles I was imprisoned here during the English Civil War. The castle museum tells the story of the island's governance and military history. Managed by English Heritage.
