Marconi's Radio Experiments

1897-1898

Guglielmo Marconi conducted some of his earliest and most important radio experiments on the Isle of Wight. In 1897, he transmitted radio signals from The Needles Hotel at Alum Bay to a ship in the Solent, demonstrating the practical potential of wireless communication. In 1898, at Queen Victoria's request, he established a wireless station at Osborne House to maintain contact with the Prince of Wales, who was convalescing aboard the royal yacht in Cowes Roads. These experiments were among the first practical demonstrations of radio communication in the world and established the Isle of Wight's place in the history of telecommunications. A memorial at Alum Bay marks the site of Marconi's transmissions.
