Newport

Working county town and administrative hub at the centre of the island

The county town and administrative centre of the Isle of Wight, sitting at the head of the River Medina in the heart of the island. Newport is the largest town on the island with a population of around 25,000 and serves as the commercial, civic and transport hub. The High Street and St James's Square form the shopping core, with a mix of independent shops, national chains and the indoor market. The bus station provides the main interchange for island bus services. St Thomas's Church, the Minster, stands at the top of the High Street. Carisbrooke Castle sits on the western edge of the town, and the Quay Arts Centre on the river provides gallery and performance space. Newport is a working town rather than a tourist destination, handling the everyday business of island life. The County Hall, the magistrates' court, the main hospital and the Isle of Wight College are all here. Industrial estates on the outskirts provide employment in light manufacturing, distribution and services.
